These cues or signals have never been 100% accurate: cons, scams, theater have been false positives; L2 writers, mistakes, cultural misunderstandings have been false negatives.

Generative AI makes it easier to produce work that looks like it has these cues. It can make it easier to look competent, empathetic, or knowledgeable. In other words, the superficial signals become malleable.
